Independent Surfer

The idea came to fruition when three Swedish gentlemen met on a boat trip, from Bali to Thailand and encountered a variety of problems along the way. Eventually, half the crew left the boat, and ultimately they realized that each person who remained brought their own special set of skills to the table. As the tradition phinisi sailboat almost sank, they all displaying camaraderie and real grit, ultimately leading them to become business partners.

The main purpose of the trip was repositioning a boat, but along the way they stopped over at some of the world’s finest surf spots – a trip of a lifetime. The discussion of learning to surf eventually came about and the plan was then set in stone, “It’s time to teach the world how to surf, in a professional way with regard to safety and knowledge about the art of surfing,” and thus the idea of the surf camp was born.

Fast forward a couple years and the surf camp was created. It can be best described as a profound life changing experience although it sounds cliche. For many, their journey starts out with the desire of learning to surf at the camp, this then turns into a desire to balance work and life. Many people who come to the camp are searching for something new, something out of the ordinary, and oftentimes they find it when their bodies and minds are pushed to the limit.

The Camp started in 2006 and has been teaching surfing ever since. Fast forward 12 years and I come into the picture, a young, hungry boy looking to chase my dream of teaching surfing in the world’s best waves and my journey with the camp starts. Why mention me in this story? Well everything you will read about the camp is more or less from my perspective, I hope I do a good job of describing how life here really is.
