ABOUT THE INDEPENDENT SURFER

We came up with the idea of the Independent Surfer in February 2020.  We had been living together at a surf camp in Indonesia for the past year and realized that we had we had truly adopted an adventurous lifestyle driven by our passion for surfing.

We created the Independent Surfer as a reflection of our goal to create space in our lives to be able to surf everyday – a goal we know many people share.  Through the Independent Surfer we hope to document our progression towards our goals, and teach you how to surf with our extensive trio of online courses, surf consulting, and online classes.

Keeping the theme of the Independent Surfer, we hope to inspire you by being as independent as possible, so everything you see on our website and social media platforms is made entirely by us.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to educate and inspire you to be a better surfer; better in every sense of the word. We know that learning to surf can be a struggle and there is a lot of information and misinformation out there. Our goal is to bring you the most up to date and detailed information, so that you can progress as quickly as possible in your surfing.

Our website serves as a platform for pure surf progression. Join us as we dive deep into the already existing information regarding surfing as a pastime and add new ideas and principles, turning surfing into a graduate degree subject. In short, we believe that knowledge is power and we want to give power to the people.

JORDY

I am originally from the East Coast of South Africa and I have been surfing since 2007.  I began surf instructing when I graduated high school in 2013.  While working as a surf instructor, I completed a year diploma in sports management and a year diploma in coaching science.  In 2018, I became a surf instructor at Surf Camp Lombok in Indonesia.  I am now Head Instructor and Part-Owner of the camp.  As a surfer, my focus has always been on understanding the detailed body mechanics and cause-and-effect relationships that make surfing possible.  When the pandemic put a hold on in-person surf coaching, I was inspired to put this knowledge together into a comprehensive online platform. My goal with the Independent Surfer is to break surfing down to its base layers to help you set a strong foundation for your surfing.

KIMBERLY

I am originally from New Jersey and didn’t start surfing until 2016. I found surfing while traveling around Indonesia after graduating from law school, a few months before starting my first job in “Big Law.” I completely fell in love with surfing and was crushed when I started working long hours in an office far from the ocean. So, I did the only thing I could think of: went on an extreme budget, paid off all my law school loans in two years, and moved to California. Once I made it to California, I thought I was living the dream, but I managed to get even luckier from there. In 2019, I landed a job working completely remotely.  Before starting the new job, I went back to the same surf camp in Indonesia for a two-week trip.  Again, I fell in love, but this time with a new surf instructor at the camp, Jordy. I promptly let my company know that I would be staying in Indonesia, and the rest is history. My goal with the Independent Surfer is to inspire you to chase your surf dreams regardless of where you are in life.
