Our Mission

Our mission is to help you learn to surf through our online surf course surf coaching and surf lessons. We know that learning to surf can be a struggle and there is a lot of information and misinformation out there. We strive to bring you the most up-to-date and detailed online surf course so that you can progress as quickly as possible.

Our goal for the Independent Surfer is to be the industry leader in the surf education field and we try our best to live up to that standard every day so that you can become a better surfer.

Our History

Founded in 2020, the Independent Surfer began when the pandemic forced the travel industry to grind to a halt. Somewhat stranded in paradise, founders Kimberly and Jordy came up with a concept to share their knowledge in an exponentially progressive digital landscape.

Since the dawn of the idea, Kimberly and Jordy have learned how to create every single aspect you see here today. From in-depth research through website design and the creation of the online course, everything you see has been independently created by the Independent Surfer founders to help you become a better surfer, sticking to the theme of creating and inspiring surf independence.

Jordy

I am originally from the East Coast of South Africa and I have been surfing since 2007.  I began surf instructing when I graduated high school in 2013.  While working as a surf instructor, I completed a year diploma in sports management and a year diploma in coaching science.  In 2018, I became a surf instructor at Surf Camp Lombok in Indonesia.  I am now Head Instructor and Part-Owner of the camp.  As a surfer, my focus has always been on understanding the detailed body mechanics and cause-and-effect relationships that make surfing possible.  When the pandemic put a hold on in-person surf coaching, I was inspired to put this knowledge together into a comprehensive online platform. My goal with the Independent Surfer is to break surfing down to its base layers to help you set a strong foundation for your surfing.

Kimberly

I am originally from New Jersey and didn’t start surfing until 2016. I found surfing while traveling around Indonesia after graduating from law school, a few months before starting my first job in “Big Law.” I completely fell in love with surfing and was crushed when I started working long hours in an office far from the ocean. So, I did the only thing I could think of: went on an extreme budget, paid off all my law school loans in two years, and moved to California. Once I made it to California, I thought I was living the dream, but I managed to get even luckier from there. In 2019, I landed a job working completely remotely.  Before starting the new job, I went back to the same surf camp in Indonesia for a two-week trip.  Again, I fell in love, but this time with a new surf instructor at the camp, Jordy. I promptly let my company know that I would be staying in Indonesia, and the rest is history. My goal with the Independent Surfer is to inspire you to chase your surf dreams regardless of where you are in life.
